Steering rack remove and replace

What sort of time does it take to remove /replace a steering rack on a 156 2.0 TS '02 ?, and is a difficult job?

Re: Steering rack remove and replace

I don't think there is anything too difficult about it. The only problem is the lack of access. You will have to drop the rear part of the subframe down to get in there.

Re: Steering rack remove and replace

This is something I've been looking to do too as I want to replace my inner track rods.

I read in the Alfa repair manual that you can undo the two(I think) bolts that hold the steering rack to to sub frame, disconnect the hoses after emptying the power steering fluid as best as possible, disconnect both track rod ends at the ball joint and then it should slide out of the gap between the arch and the subframe on the drivers side.

Even though I haven't done this myself, the manual said it could be done and whilst looking last weekend, it does seem possible, but I'd guess it's a very tight fit. It's probably worth allowing for dropping the subframe as suggeted above, but maybe worth a try out of the drivers wheel arch to see if it is possible.
