Alfa Centro, my Alfa dealer here in Sydney Australia, organised an Alfa Romeo Track Day at the International Eastern Creek Raceway yesterday. It was free, I was allowed to bring my friends, there was food, drinks and lots of Alfas!!!
As soon as I got there I was buzzing, just seeing.. hearing Alfas ripping it up on the race track!!! A driving instructor took us out in the black 156 GTA, he just pushed it so damn hard around corners I NEVER thought he would make, through a tight S-Bend that just seemed impossible and far out I just fell in love with racing and the 156 GTA instantly. My heart was beating so damn fast I couldn't even speak to the instructor afterwards... my brain was not working!!! hehehehe.
We then did a few more laps in the GTA, sooo nice. Then a few laps in a 147 then it was MY TURN!!!!
1st thing: You all REALLY SHOULD take your Alfas out to a track day. Get 10 of your friends, hire a couple of instructors, they will teach you how to drive. The instructor made me do a lap easy, telling me exactly which lines to take, when to change gears, where to look..... I really had this so wrong... in the city I look for potholes... on a race track you are going so fast you have to look so far ahead at where you are going... in corners that I thought I needed to turn in, the instructor would say "not yet! don't turn yet Justin, ok, ease off, brake a little, change into 3rd now.. ok ok ease on, ok full throttle now, don't brake through here" etc... I just did what he told me to do and damn I was racing!!!
2nd lap I was doing 80km corners and a massive 140km/hr on the last sweeping corner, using the whole track, which I really thought I could never do but the 147 just sticks to the road like super glue and the abs brakes are so damn good... you can brake so damn late just before entering a corner... it's all very amazing. I am so glad now that I bought an Alfa. The 147 IS a performance car. It goes so damn well on the race track. I am in awe. It's not going to be my 1st time!!! I liked the instructor so much I am organising private lessons with him and more track days in future.
Here's some photos ( not too many as I was too busy driving cars to take them! Sorry!):
Yeaha!!! I am still buzzing from the experience.
