Fitting shocks to 156 SW

Hi
Has any one fitted their own front shocks to a 156 SW before.
I am repalcing my 77k ones with a pair of Bilsteins and keeping the original springs. I quite fancy doing the job myself but if its a total pain involving compression tools etc I'll let the garage do it?
Can the shocks be removed without the springs?
I have new top rubbers and lower bolts.

The job is quite technical and if your worried about it then I wouldn't advise you to start on it, you do really need full garage backup for this task as the cheapo steel nuts and bolts on the front suspension do not like being seperated from each other. Just ask aicwilson about the fun I had this weekend fiting his Koni FSDs, plus if you use the standard springs on lowered shocks then I'll tip my hat to you if you get the spring caps back on.

I changed springs on one 2 weekends ago. That was ok, but the one before was a nightmare, and even a blowlamp wouldn't budge the pinch bolts at the bottom of the front struts. Angle grinder was the only recourse- again.
