What a muppet! I knew I was low but the petrol station was closed. I reckoned I'd be OK for the journey ahead, based on the characteristics of the fuel gauge in my old Selespeed - but I was wrong! The bloody gauge said there was a bit left and I conked out on the bloody M25!
Luckily I'd just started on the slip road down to South Mimms on my way to the A1. I pulled over and set about walking to the service station a short distance away when who should appear but 2 Shining Knights of the Highways Agency!
After (more than) a little prompting, they proffered a lift to said fuel emporium where I stocked up on 5L of the black stuff. They were going to let me walk back (to teach me a lesson no doubt) but one of them had to use the facilities and I collared him as he emerged!
A lift back as well then!
Anyways, she was a ***** to start up - I must have been turning her over for a good 60s in total and then she finally fired. I gave the HA guy the thumbs up and then she promptly died again
. A couple more turn-overs and she started for good, seemingly running a little hesitantly but settling down eventually.
Now then, this is my 1st diesel. Why was she so hard to start and have I done any damage? I didn't know whether to give her any throttle when turning her over (can you flood a diesel?) but I did eventually, a few pumps of the foot.
And how about the old anecdotal thing 'ooh, you'll have pulled a load of crap into the injectors...'. Will I have? And will a few good blats clear it?
I'm mildly worried - help!
