If he's used the FIAT timing blocks then the inlet vaves are bent, the inlet manifold will be hot to the touch when running too, as it should always be cold, this will be why the engine got hot. Is the tickover lumpy at all? If I was you I'd be getting a compression test done and billing him for the damage.
The Variator when worn does sound like a diesel on startup, but as you rev it it will quieten up, they never get noisier as you speed up. If the noise worsens then there is something else majorly wrong.
