My only tip is to: Disconnect the battery, loosen the offside wheel nuts, raise the car and support, remove the wheel and splash guards, remove the aux belt, remove the down pipe, support the engine, remove the rear engine mount, SIMPLY remove the subframe (not liking this now are you?), alternator is now visible, disconnect the 2 wires, remove the 3 alternator mounting bolts, lower alternator out.
Refiting is simply the reversal of removal.
In all for a DIY'er your looking at 2 days.
In garage I'd drop the engine. It is just the worst question you could have asked.
Before you contemplate starting, ensure it really is the alternator that's dead, check the engine earth straps and clean thier earths thoroughly and test again, I've seen people go all the way to find out the new ones not charging because of that.
