Hi all!

Just bought 2001 Alfa 156 1.6 ts veloce and somebody told me that something must be done to engine, if its hasnt been done, then it will cost about a grand to repair. did he mean cambelt change? car came from ebay and doest hav any history done 112000 miles, so i dont know if cambelt has been changed. does anyone no how much that will be or is it easy to do? im not a newbie with engines.

I just had my cambelt and variator done my an alfa dealer, 400, belt needs to be done every 36000 miles. Shop around.

Yes, cambelt, but for a 1.6 you ought to be able to get the work done for just under £300. The repair cost is to have the head rebuilt when the cambelt snaps or the tensioner fails and it slips bringing up to 16 valves into contact with moving pistons. We also recommend changing the big-end shells as they also have a tendency to fail after a cambelt goes as they get squished by the shock.

If you are planning to DIY, then try the excellent search facility on this forum: others have done the job and will have posted their experiences, tools and parts required, etc.
