Clutch release bearing

I took the gearbox off the 156 that I'm breaking today, and found that the clutch release bearing had pretty much fallen apart.

Is this a common fault, and could it explain the long clutch pedal in my running 156? It bites quite high, but has to be on the floor to avoid any crunching selecting gears (especially 1st).
