156 JTS Noisy at over 4k Revs - now fixed
Hi Guys & Gals
Its been a while since I last checked the site but I wanted to tell you about an interesting problem my 2002 156 JTS has been suffering for the last 32K miles that has finally been resolved!
I brought the car at 38k and had all belts etc changed by my local Alfa Garage, all good then about two weeks later when I was driving at about 70 there was a bit of a bang and the noise of the engine increased dramatically.
I assumed it was a blowing exhaust and sure enough when I took the car to a different Alfa garage the front flexi pipe was split - so £120 later this was replaced. However the noise remained - between 4k and redline you could not speak over the engine noise!
I also had vibration in the clutch and brake pedals so took it back to alfa who suggested the anti roll bar bushes. I changed all the bushes and still the same problem.
Next I discovered the air con pipe had broken down by the lower front grill and this was responsible for a lot for metal clanking sounds that I had been hearing in the car but still bad engine noise.
I continued to drive the car for 12 months with the same noise problem but just got used to it - although every couple of months the engine management light would come up telling me to take the car to the dealer - this would reset after I switched the engine on and off.
Finally last week the cambelt was due again and after picking up the car I drove home. Only to think I had picked up the wrong car - it was about 30% quicker and sounded sweet as a nut with no engine noise at all!!!
I called the garage to ask if the belt could have slipped a notch after the initial change and put the timing out but they denied this - however they mentioned the exhaust side could have been a bit out??
I now wonder if the aircon pipe breaking could have jolted anything - but I am over the moon and now love the car and have cancelled selling up and getting an Audi!
Do you think I cause much damage running the car like this for 32K, seems perfect now so I hope not.
Thanks for listening -
