156 won't start, CODE warning stays ON

My 156 turns over but wont start, and the CODE key symbol stays lit. This can happen once or many times and is intermitant.
I know it is the immobiliser, however dont know how to fix the problem. I have not been able to work out if it is one key or both.
Would disconecting the battery be of any help (does this re set the ECU?)

Most likely is that the immobiliser connection has come loose. If you remove the steering column cowling you should be able to see it and try the connections ... IIRC the immobiliser cabling is wrapped around the steering column.
