156 no idle!

hi chaps. my name is paul and i drive a 2000 156 1.8 petrol. today i drove to the shops and when i came out to the car and started it it just died again. started it again and had to keep feathering the throttle to keep her running. on the way home it felt a bit fluffy on the throttle. could it be an idle sensor or maybe flow meter or even a lambda sensor?? thanks in advance for any help guys. ah the joys of owning an alfa! cheers. paul.
