Hmmm Corroded Fixings

My Selespeed has done 96k on a Dec '99 V plate.
All the fixings under the bonnet are really badly corroded, and I mean badly. For instance, you cant even see any threads on the A/C compressor retaining bolt! the only way to remove it would be to cut it off.

Also I tried to change my air filter the other weekend and managed to damage 2 of the 3 captive nuts, I had to invent some alturnative fixings to get it to seal.

I can't think of any good reason the corrosion would be so extreme, I used to have an '89 Peugeot 205 GTI (rubbish build quality, almost as good as the Alfa to own) and that wasn't anywhere near as bad.

Do I just have to get used to it and replace any fixings as and when I need to remove them?

Re: Corroded Fixings

No, the undertray has gone.

The last owner also lived up a muddy lane, which probably didn't help!

Re: Corroded Fixings

if you can get the top of the airfilter box off, replace the iron bolts with stainless steel or copper ones... the original bolts are made of the worst ever iron Alfa could find !
the undertray is a neccessity in wet climates (I live in Holland) mud is a way of life here !
