Faulty Steering rack - 156 V6 ???
Cutting a VERY long story short, I have owned a 156 2.5 V6 now for just over a year. When I brought the car, it had a heavy knock below the drivers side footwell. Here is a list of things I have done to cure the knock...
Top wishbones replaced
Lower wishbones replaced
Shock absorbers / springs replaced
Anti roll bar replaced
Exhaust mounts replaced
Suspension top mounts replaced
Top engine mount replaced
Track rod ends replaced
Brake pads replaced and discs replaced
...so from that list, almost everything on the front suspension has been replaced and I still have a rattle. I think I may have diagnosed the rattle, but could do with some help backing this up!
The car basically rattles on the front suspension (seems to be the drivers side - under the footwell) over bumps / imperfections in the road surface. This sometimes turns into a knock - although the noise has settled down since having a new anti-roll bar fitted.
I have noticed that when stationary, sudden movements in the steering (left to right) cause a knock, which can be felt through the steering wheel. I have had a good look today, and found that the knock seems to be coming from the steering rack (drivers side), behind the gaiter. Is this likely to be a complete new steering rack, or is there a common component that is prone to failure in the steering. All I can find on the forum is faulty droplinks - which mine have been replaced, and a flappy undertray - which mine has temporarily been removed to eliminate another possible cause!
Any help greatly appreciated!
