ABS/ASR issue fixed myself (saved 2,000 euro)
I have a 2001 Alfa 147 Lusso ... It has had an ABS and ASR fault light on for a long time but a mechanic (wrongly) told me that all was fine and it was just a faulty sensor. I tried then to get it through its 2 year MOT (called NCT here in Ireland) and it failed on the ABS fault. Brought it to a dealer and they plugged it into pc and said it needed a new ABS unit ... all in all about €2000 euro ... I was tempted but car was not worth much more than that so I said "No thanks".
Anyway, I got on this great Alfa owner forum and found out a few things... went out with my multimeter and started testing the wiring ... eventually found out there was no power going to the ABS unit because of a faulty earth wire that had been mentioned by someone on here. I fixed wiring and problem disappeared.
I was both elated that I had fixed the problem myself and that I had not put 2K into a new unit that would not have sorted the problem BUT I was also livid with the dealer who just said without any testing of the wiring I needed a brand new unit.
Hopefully others on here will read this and see that when you are told you need a new part it is often not the case. If they are just so lazy and just plug in the bloody computer and dont check simple things then dont believe them !!
Thanks to all on here ... great site !
