As Pat says, it happens by the ECU realising the Lambda is duff, so it reverts to a preset figure, and as the MAF informs it of the air mass it calculates the injector timing against the preset, this is always higher than the learned figure so it always throws in more fuel, which drops your power and fuel economy, you'll also notice a lot of grayish smoke if you drop into second and boot it up the street when the Lambds shot, A MAF will normally not allow the engine to rev over 3000 rpm when it totally fails.
And it's located in the downpipe just infront of the CAT, the wire runs up the back of the engine bay.
Which red light??? you don't get one for either the MAF or Lambda. I suspect you have a coil pack gone. Get it onto diag and pull the codes, they'll tell you exactly what's up.
