Re: Airbag Light MOT Failure

You need to fix the fault though or the light will come back on (and all your airbags will be disabled!!)

Re: Airbag Light MOT Failure

You'll have to modify the AlfaDiag OBDLead to get access to the MY97 Airbag functions though! Alfa airbag probs often caused by dodgy wiring connectors under seats for seatbelt pretensioners and passenger presence sensors.

People used to survive crashes without airbags you know

5% of fatalities are caused by the bags deployment, just think of that one.

Re: Airbag Light MOT Failure

Is the true for the UK? I know in the US they have much more powerful airbags to account for drivers not wearing seat belts. Plus does it include people carrying babies in the front and not turning off the airbag or even UK drivers who don't wear seatbelts?

Re: Airbag Light MOT Failure

word of advice: if you are gonna work on the airbag system , make sure the battery is disconnected (wait 15 minutes) and when fitting a new crash sensor be out of the car when another person connects the battery again. (bettter work alone in this case !)
There is a movie on Youtube that shows the power when an airbag deploys (search for airbag). There are cases of severe injuries of people who were working on the airbag system when it suddenly fired !!!

P.S. in Holland we have APK (MOT) and funny enough your car will not pass when the windscreen washer does not work, but a not working airbag system will pass..... so much for sense !

Probably because airbags are not required, even on new cars.
Windscreen washers are required.

Another point about airbags and all other pyrotechnic devices (ie seatbelt pretensioners), they have a 10-year life. Can you imagine the expense if you had to replace them all.

my 156 is from 1999 so I am worried when it passes the 10 year mark... do we need to replace all those pyrotechnic crap ?

In theory yes. But no.

We are already into the phase where there are thousands (millions) of pre1998 cars driving around with airbags. None (or very few) of those will have replaced the airbags. Have a look at the cost of a massive passenger side airbag and you will see why!
