G-147, although it is your personal opinion (and yes, you're right, diesels from a couple of years ago were smelly, loud and slow) I can't agree on saying today's diesels are smelly, loud and slow. Modern diesels have undergone some kind of revolution: they're getting quiter (JTD, HDI, CDI), the performance is in most cases up there with normal engines (sometimes diesels have even more power), they're a bless to drive in heavy traffic (just get your foot from the clutch and the thing starts to roll, without having to press the accelerator to keep the car from shutting down), in general the torque is fantastic and believe me modern diesels aren't slow and they definately don't smell.
I personally (well it's a company lease car, so I don't actually own it) have a Alfa 147 1.9 JTD Distinctive. Before I chose the JTD I test drove the 1.6 T-Spark Veloce. Beautiful engine, awesome sound, nothing wrong with it. Then I test drove the JTD and thought this is it: awesome power (115 horsepower, I'm not used to a lot....had a VW Golf IV 1.9 SDI with 68 horse power before, so I'm spoilt now!), awesome torque, 0-100 in 9.9 seconds (just 0.6 seconds slower than the 2.0 litre, but faster than the 1.6 T-Spark Veloce), and the most important thing....the sound. Really genuine Alfa sound and to me it didn't differ that much from the 1.6 T-Spark Veloce. And then I thought of another nice feature about diesels: their fuel economy! When driving around at 120 km/h it takes about 5.5 l/100 km. How about that for fuel economy. This takes me more than 1000 km's (and I really did it!) on one fueltank! Can't wait to go on holiday to southern europe with this car!
What I also like about diesels is that they don't rev too much (yes I know, I'm one of thos comfort-drivers) and because of this interior sound is of a very comfortable level.
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I think that nowadays it really doesn't matter if you have a diesel or normal-engined car. Developments are going that fast that everytime we have more powerfull engines which produce more torque, less smell and less sound. (JTD, JTS, Twin-Spark).
At the end just one thing counts: I still enjoy it very much to drive my Alfa home!

I don't need no one to tell me about heaven, I look at my son and daughter and I believe.
