Has the turbo gone or hasn't it?
Our 2.4jtdm is now over 4 yrs old, it's done 67k, only 11k by us. Up until a month ago the turbo was getting louder. I took to Alfaworkshop and they said there was no loss of power, no point in replacing turbo, it could carry on for miles. They did note that I needed to rev the engine more, as the exhaust was smokey, but they had cleared it by revving the engine over a period.
Shortly after that visit, the turbo stopped whining. We only drive within the south circular in London most of the time, so very little chance to open the car up. However on a brief run on the M25 and down to Brighton yesterday, I noticed the turbo doesn't deliver that rush between 1.5 and 2k rpm, it happens to a lesser degree about 2.5k to 3krpm, and although the car quite happily cruised at 90mph (ish) it doesn't pull up hills as is used to.
I have bored Jamie Porter at Alfaworkshop by email, and car goes in on Wednesday; he still doesn't think it's the turbo, it may be a faulty EGR valve and has managed to get one in after a bit of wait.
Anyway possibly an interesting problem, I should be in a better position in a couple of days to let you know what has happened. Anyone with any other thoughts for what it might be?
Colnago, Vespa, Alfa Romeo, not neccesarily in that order, working to add Ducati, Ferrari, Maserati, De Rosa, Ciocc, again not necessarily in that order
