Re: Unleaded or Super Unleaded ?
I used to own a 1.6 alfa 156. Does Super unleaded make a difference? In my limited knowledge..Hell Yes ! Increase in raw bhp !! Very noticable. Hey, but I had a 1.6 so anything would increase its power.
When talking with colleagues they suggestedyou should get a % increase in performance but I felt with the accelerator and knew it.
However, in recent times I had good cause to investigate it, as I am a chemist. When Shell relaesed their new V-Power (99 RON).
Now I drive a 2.5 V6 with a touch of spice. Do I notice the increase in bhp/power performance. Wel in all honesty, not that much. Why ??
I set my students on researches to explain all about RON and what is it etc etc. I knew the basics, like the alfisti above. Knocking, 'Octane Number etc. What came back from the students was great.
Normal chain Hydrocarbons in petrol combust at a set temperature but some can combust before the desired moment (causing knocking). By adding branch chain hydrocarbons, aromatics and cyclo compounds as 'additives' (although they are not in the E-number way, they are just the same compounds in differentshapes..i.e isomers) complete and efficient combustion is achieved. As all the fuel is burnt in one instant the transfer of energy is more efficient leading to sweeter performance. A similar reason why Alfa developed the Twin spark... 2 sparks = better combustion = better energy transfer =sweet power.
Thanks to the students, their reports were much more complicated than this but yes power is the objective, but derived from more efficient/better energy transfer.
Incidently, you can get 100+ RON. What do the Touring Car/Pro teams use as fuel?
Does anyone know?
