Starting with 4 new tyres.
I swap front-rear when the fronts are half worn.
All 4 then reach the minimum at the same time.

Check out TyreTest.com - Tyre reviews - an independent consumer survey

If you can find a supplier of Uniroyals, they normally come out very well, or Dunlop Fast Response (for a little more money, but very hard to come across)

Re: Avon or Firestone - which to go for ?

My old 156 diesel had Firestone from the factory but I put Avon ZV3 on them once worn out. I've bought a few sets of Avons and have always been happy with them. I would say there wasn't a huge difference between the 2, both middle of the market. I prefer Mitchelin and have them on the GTA but they're big bucks, however since the tyre is the bit that keeps the car on the road maybe it's worth it.

TBH if you pay premium prices for tyres then whichever brand you pick you'll get a decent bit of rubber.

Mere mortals on the road won't put a tyre to the limits of its ability, so comparing brand x to brand y is a bit pointless.

Buy the best rubber you can afford, and relax. It's good enough, no matter what the name on the sidewall says.

Re: Avon or Firestone - which to go for ?

Well the latest in this episode is quite ridiculous. Having paid for the Avons I was due to have fitted y/day i thought i'd get a 2nd opinion on the tyte that had a screw in it. Initially National Tyres said it was totally unrepairable and it along with the other rear would need replacing as they were both low on thread. I personally wasn't convinced but listened their professional advice.

Anyway A local Tyre indi looked at the puncture and immediately said is was easily repairable at £11 !! and both tyres had plenty of life in them - result

So the morale of the Story is never, ever go to lying, conning National Tyres there are every bit as bad as Kwik-Fit for lying to their customers to get a sale !!!

Luckily when I rang tyre-shopper they were decent enough to allow me to cancel the order - fair play to them and I will definately use them when the tyres DO need replacing.
