Re: Variator change?
I would always suggest changing the variator, even if it sounds ok. For the sake of £85 is it really worth risking leaving it in, and it failing just after the belt change. I am a strong believer in sods law when it comes to cars.
You don't really need any special tools to do the variator other than the cam locking tools. Just a vice, 2 bits of wood and a a tool knocked up to unscrew it from the cam.
Rafe, your tool seems similar to the one I made. it is 2 thin strips of steel, crossed over with a bolt in the middle and 2 holes on the end of the strips so that it will bolt to the variator.
You will never be cool driving a Vauxhall.
