An oil flush and switching to a high quality fully synth 5W40 can sometimes temporarily quieten noisy variators.

Your quote was a bit steep. Having the variator changed usually adds abot £100 to the bill (parts and labour). I think you know that you should have had it changed, but I presume it was the steep price that put you off.

Had my 2.0 TS cambelt, tensioner, idler, balance belt, tensioner plus a full service icluding all spark plugs for £555 inc VAT at an indepandant Alfa specialist.
