Re: 156 bonnet release stuck
I am desperate! I read everything available regarding un-stucking my alfa's 156 bonnet and in the end cj's tutorial was the best as it shows the mechanism in detail. The bonnet got stuck while the battery was out to be changed and now I cannot move the car at all. After pulling on the cable until it broke( while pushing and pulling on the bonnet at the same time) I only managed to close it even more when I was pushing on the bonnet while my wife pulled on the cable.I than got desperate and started banging on the mechanism through the grille from the sides using a iron rod and a hammer. Later, I started using the screwdriver which helped me only to take the secondary catch spring out of place on the left side( the plastic cover going over it is loose as I removed the screws since I was in the process of lubing it as per your tutorial. It was just after I unstuck it when I close it as it got dark and never been able to open it since...). It now only moves very little(1-2mm), but at one point while pulling and pushing it got totally stuck and pulling the cable(I got it out through the grille on the passenger side) released it back to minimal (1-2mm) movement but not to the normal play expected when only the secondary catch holds. Pulling the cable, clicks as if the primary lock is released. However, the bonnet does not jump up and the under bonnet red clamp cannot be moved. Based on your pics I identified the metal clamp that the red under bonnet clamp presses on to release the secondary catch and tried to bang on from the passenger side using an iron rod without any results. To my amazement , it does not move. Is that clamp releasing only when it is pressed from above( got no access from above)? I tried pulling down as wellas banging from the driver's side, but nothing gives in. I also soaked it in WD 40. I decided to use bonnet catch pins upon opening the bonnet , but at this point I cannot figure out how to open it with minimal damage to the bonnet( forget about the original catch ...if I could only take it out in pieces and burn it!). HELP PLEASE, HELP!
