Wave Why is my 147 drinking oil?!

Over the past couple of months my 5 year old 147 has been drinking oil. There is no obvious leak and even though I do a lot of short journeys, this problem hadn't occurred previously. After a few days, the low pressure light comes on when the revs change (slowing down or pulling away mostly). Any ideas please?

1) They can use 100ml of oil in 100 miles and this is 'normal'
2) If the light has came on you may have a problem already.

These engines die quickly if starved of oil, and if it has been regulary run low on oil, the oil pump can get damaged and then the pressure drops and you need a new crankshaft...........

What oil are you using at the moment, it should be semi-synth 10w40, if it is not it might be too thin an oil at temperature and being burned off.

bloody hell it goes from MAX to oil light in only a few days? thats very bad. do a compression test, you should expect to see major losses.

Is smoke pouring out the back of it? Can you smell burning oil?

Re: Why is my 147 drinking oil?!

you are actually saying 2 different things here if i am correct.

1) it's using lots of oil

2) when full of oil and on load you are getting the low pressure light.

if both of the above are correct then your engine is not long for this world.

check inside the tailpipe to see if it is black with oil.

are you getting a greasy residue on the back of the car? run your finger over the boot of the car after a drive and see if you have oil on your finger (the dirt will be black and a bit sticky).

I assume when you say there is no obvious leak you have actually looked underneath to see if there is any oil all over the underside of the car and not just looked at the ground of your regular parking spot?

Character is what you have left when you've lost everything you can lose.

This probably doesn't apply if your car is drinking oil in the quantities you say, but I didn't have any oil leaks on the drive yet the front & back of the engine and the sump were all covered in the black stuff - turns out to be the camshaft seals and a leaky variator solenoid.

Again it wouldn't cause a leak on the scale of yours, however it's something to eliminate at least.
