Neil, I have always said disconnect the vac pipe and blank it off, this way the butterfly is always open.
It was explained to me that the vac closes the butterfly and if the egr is capped off then then engine will try and suck air, if it can't get it from the intake then the next place would be the valve stem oil seals.
Another member questioned that theory saying this. "there is no need to shut off butterfly in case of blanking EGR, it will remain open all the time except when switching off the engine"
I understand the logic in what I was told - by garage D next door to red dot tuning.
It may be the case that it closes just to reduce judder on switch off?
For me, cap it off, it only takes a few minutes, it won't hurt whichever theory on this is correct.
