Smaky could well be correct, the Injectors on the TS are pretty noisy, and they do tend to be more noticeable when the engine is hot and idling.
The other likely cause is a worn variator, if it has worn to the point that it is noisy all of the time it needs changing, which means a full cambelt and tensioners job as well.
Does the car sound like a diesel when it is first started? that is the classic symptom of a failing variator. They usually start sounding like a Diesel only at startup, and as they deteriorate they rattle all of the time. Performance economy also suffer at this stage.
The variator is located almost directly below the oil filler cap, so if thats where the noise is from it may well be that.
