I'd go for a 1.9 16v if you could. Have you done the sums regarding depreciation etc?
thats what i really want to do, but they still cost too much so depreciation eats up more than the saving in fuel, plus i cant really afford tospend £5k on a car now that i've bought a house

yeah i have seen a few threads where people have been forced to make the move to JTD and they usually seem happy enough.

i'm only getting 27mpg from the TS. surely a remapped JTD would be significantly better than that with my current driving style
i'd be happy with 37mpg average.

wow, so a 2.4 can return the mpg i'm looking for and also give the performance i need, so its really only a question of handling.
thanks everyone for your replies. yesterday i was feeling pretty down about the prospect of getting a 1.9jtd 8v, and i didnt even consider a 2.4 10v a possibility, but now i'm thinking the 2.4 10v could be the better option
one thing i am sure of, i cant see myself driving anything non-alfa.
