The other reason, is actually a few other reasons,
yes at 3K rpm the cam phases back and gives you the best timing and so best power, so either the Variator is shot or the variator solenoid, but neither of these affect power at the upper end so it's not those, but the variator is most likely shot anyway, diesel noise on startup confirms that (don't worry, they dont matter),
Now the cause I think is most likely is either a duff plug, or more likely a dead coil pack, these normally come with an engine warning light when you hit the gas, there is also the options of crank sensor, MAF or Lamda.
Your best bet is to get the fault codes read and see what they point to, in the end, 10 minutes on the laptop normally nails the fault correctly.
