I've had my second hand 1.6 51 plate 147 for the best part of a month now. Since then it has seen quite a few miles (1500, to be precise!) and I have also driven it enough that I now have a few niggles.
I really love the aesthetics and driving please of the car in general, so naturally I want to keep it well maintained. Being mechanically inept, I'm taking it to my local italian car specialists on Thursday to be serviced and the few problems I'm about to mention will be looked at at the same time. Until then, I wonder if you guys can help free my mind of the paranoia that my niggles might turn out to be serious and/or expensive!
So, first is first. For the past week the car has been making a rather annoying, high-pitch screeching sound. It's higher in pitch than the sound you'd associate with a belt slipping, and it only happens when the vehicle is moving.
My guess was a wheel bearing (it seems to be that 'type' of noise?!) as I cannot trace it to anything else specific. I have tried pushing hard on the brakes while moving a number of times to eliminate dirt in the brakes, turning off the climate control, loading up the alternator, and pushing in the clutch when I hear the noise. Unfortunately it comes and goes too often for me to perform any further testing, it might not do it for a while and then on the next journey it'll be much more frequent.
Second gripe; odd sounds from the suspension. A squeaking noise that seems to be all too common on these forums, and is usually associated with the wishbones. Appears to be coming from the rear of the car, but most here seem to report this as a problem with the front suspension?
Thirdly, the engine seems particularly noisy for the first 10 seconds or so after turning the ignition key. I don't know if this is normal behavior, or whether it could be associated with a faulty variator.
Lastly, she can be very jerky at crawling speeds in first and second gears. Perhaps related is that, as of late, the clutch (or at least I assume that's where it's coming from) has been making a low pitch squealing sound as if slipping. This is not the same sound as I mentioned in my first niggle, and it goes away as soon as the clutch pedal is fully released. This only tends to happen on hill starts or if I'm having to rev the engine a little higher than usual when pulling off for any reason.
I can't be specific, but from around the same time this started happening it also seems as if there has been a reduction in low end torque. It just seems as if I'm always having to use a little more gas when moving off from a red light or standing at a junction to get the car moving.
So, what do you think?
Have I bought a dud? I really want to like this car (not to mention I couldn't really afford to replace it), so I eagerly await your replies.
