Are Selespeeds problematic and best avoided

On the search for a replacement 156 Sportwagon.

I remember in the early days reading that there were 'issues' with the Selespeed boxes - so I kind of ignore them.

But is this right, or are they worth looking at?

Unless you really really want a selespeed, dont get one.

Most of them develop an expensive fault at some point in their life.

If its what you want, the potential expense can be factored in, but if youre not fussed about it, get a manual or a Q System instead.

Like anything, if looked after they can be fine.
Most issues tend to be due to poor battery, poor electrical connections or the pump failing.

I have 99 selespeed, only issue sofar is a broken clutch pressure bearing after 120k (not selespeed related) .... the ill reputation is not deserved, keep an eye on the selespeed oil and battery and they have a long life.

Do a search on here, and judge for yourself.

Also have a drive of one, you may not like it. The novelty can also wear off for some people after a while.

Mine is working well.

Had a new pump 2 years ago, other than that no problems at all!

Re: Are Selespeeds problematic and best avoided

Our second selespeed and to date no probs, but like they say service record is a must - like everthing.
I find it great full auto in traffic and the paddles (easier than the older button type) or gear stick to shift up and down on the nicer roads - easier than a manual - but hey some people wouldn't go near one- its all down to personal preference in the end and like they say drive one and see, but i love it.

Good luck
