Hi guys and gals, this is my first post due to after extensive searching in the sites forums I still couldn't really find what I was looking for.
This is the old 'friend of mine' story so bear with me...
He recently brought a '98 156 1.8 TS for a grand from a mate of his who found it cheap at an auction (75000miles).
It was cheap mainly due to this 'knocking' noise it has that increases with revs. Now, no-one knows the history of it, whether it was run low on oil or not, but my guess is that it was, and so we might have a big-end problem.
I have heard that sometimes if a 100% synthetic oil is used (as may have been the case by a previous owner) it can dislodge accumulated gunk and clog up the filter or pump, so oil may not be getting to the engine properly.
So my questions are, how long will this knocking go on for before the engine becomes totally stuffed? Would it be worth trying an oil change using Selenia 20K and seeing if that helps? Is there any way to check oil pump pressure?
I have no experience to compare a knocking noise with, but it does sound like the pistons as noise increases with revs. If I did an oil change I reckon it would probably tell me alot i.e. there may be metal shavings in the oil...
Oh yeah, as soon as I heard it I told him not to drive it at all.
Any advice would be mucho appreciated, cheers.
