156 1.8ts Veloce help needed!
Hi everyone, i have just acquired a 1999 156 1.8 that is going to need quite a bit of work.
I firstly want to check the the car is not in the latter stages of an untimely death.
When revved there is white/grey smoke (quite a lot of) coming from the exhaust. When ticking over i have checked the smoke (which is a lot less when idling)and it feels quite damp, not particularly petrolly, any ideas what this would point to? I've read quite a bit on here about lambda sensors and mafs, would a fault with either/both of these be enough to produce so much smoke? The car was an mot failure on emissions, all tests were high but i dont have the specific readings. On the same point i think the car has just the 1 lambda sensor that i can see which is just prior to the cat, does that sound correct for this model?
Also im going to need a new clutch because its slipping badly. Can anyone point me towards a cheap replacement?
Thirdly i have noticed that the tickover is quite eratic. Anywhere between 1000 and 1800, seems to change randomly.
Fourthly(!) When i turn the key to the position just before the actual starting position i can hear what sounds like a relay clicking. Sounds like its comming from underneath where the windscreen wipers are in front of the driving position. What is this?
Fifthly, i'd just like to say what a very useful and friendly forum this seems to be, not like some where they just seem to be inhabbitted by morons trying to 'out-tech' each other!
Any help will be gratefully received.
