OK the alernator on these engines is buiried but the 4 hour quote is about right, you have to move the power steering pump out the way , have they checked the supplied voltage yet, if it's steady then it's not the regulator, but also it is possible to change the brushpack without removing the alternator, this takes around an hour but is a bit of a wrist killer, but is a lot cheeaper to do, normally around £100 all in as opposed to the £300 for replacing the alternator. It is easier still though to remove the Alternator to replace the brush, Brush itself costs £10 and takes 2 minutes with the alternator out.
