Ok Sam..welcome and pin back your ears for a few bits of important info.
1) Check the oil now. Top it up if its low using 10w/40 semi synthetic oil, and check it every week without fail.
2) How many miles has it done. Don't forget it needs a new timing belt and tensioner every 36,000 miles..without fail.
As to the cutting out, well thats probably why the last owner sold it. You need the ECU interrogated to see if a fault code is logged. The first thing I'd check is that the battery connections are clean and tight, and that you have no loose fuses. I don't know if there is a main fuse. If there is replace that.
Its probably something quite small and silly, but its just finding the darned thing.
