Re: Whos got the highest milleage 1.9 JTD?
Thing is our (Tony_156jtd's and mine) engines have 80,000 and 101,000 on them and are 4 years old. They are neither "old" or "high mileage" (200,000 would be high for a JTD), they re just about run in.
What you say about fully synthetic might apply to old high milers but ours would benefit from a good clean out to make them run more efficiently. But the key thing about fully synthetic is PROTECTION nothing offers as good protection from metal against metal contact as fully synthetic (it is thinner straight away so coats all surfaces without warming) and stays stable (ie doesnt breakdown) at far higher temps than mineral oil/part synthetic. Thats without mentioning the efficiency gains because of the low viscosity. Also they dont need to be replaced that often as the oil is designed for a long life (ie to give high protection over a long periods of warming up, cooling down and being put under pressure) and our engines designed for long service intervals, so replacing that often does nothing but line the (already deep) pockets of the oil companies
These are tough engines and manufactures alway err on the side of caution anyway, theyre designed to take puniishment (loads of people dont do their oil changes on time, some not at all!) and could easily handle 20,000 mile services no problem. My 2.4 JTD had 30,000 miles with no history on the same oil with a destroyed air filter when I got it and it never apppeared to suffer. Filled it with fully synthetic fine, (and replaced the air filter!) no probs and it ran smoother and the mpg increased.
I ve used this oil for 8 years in 4 versions of this engine (4 and 5 cylinders, indirect injection and common rail, some with history, some without, mileage as high as 140,000) always flushing first, with no probs. These engines can take loads of abuse and the way we treat them (ie very well, better than average) should give us some confidence in their longevity, we dont need to worry about oil seals and flushing too much dirt out, relax and enjoy them!
