Gearbox Linkage?

I am just preparing my 147 to sell, however the gearbox is now a pain to use. It does not spring back into neutral and is also a pain to get into third gear, it seems to be worse once the engine is up to temperature. Is this an easy fix which can be done at home or something a garage would be better off fixing?

Re: Gearbox Linkage?

Are the changes graunchy into 3rd when the engine is up to temp? I ask this as if it's geting harder when the temp increses, it's because the engine is spining slower and so is the worn synchro. But I would mainly think that you are suffering from self loosening gear linkage syndrome, a more common problem than people think on 147s and 156s, look at the linkage connections to the gearbox under the battery tray and make sure they are still tight.

No the changes are not graunchy at all, its just a struggle to get through the gate from second into third, you have to put quite a bit of pressure on to get it into the neutral position, but ultimatly end up going past third due to the force required. Its only really bad once the engine is up to temp.

Re: Gearbox Linkage?

Have a read of this thread:

Should be some bushes on top of the gearbox. Have no pics but is a very common fault and can be fixed with a quids worth of plastic bushes.

Rossrichardson on page 2 has attached a good thumbnail pic of the linkage.

Good luck
