If I can use the old 'Cant see the forest for the trees' term,
we can all see by reading these threads that all Alfa engines come with their own inherent fault/faults and that its just a matter of time before they show themselves, this would explain one owner dumping copious amounts of oil in when only covering short distances and visa-versa. A seconed undiagnoised problem in the engine could be the cause of this consumption.
While the likes of Aston etc.. like to stick on a numbered 'hand made' plaque to give there cars some cudos, Alfas, it would appear receive their soul somewhere along the engine production line, probably at the point when that 1 nut isnt tightened quite enough.
As Spliff said 'Isn't this the point of owning an Alfa'.
