to determine the compressor you need first decide which tools you want, then check the requriement of those tools in terms of operating psi and displacement CFM, then you can see which compressor will be good enough.
i use a 2HP direct drive oil free compressor with a 24l tank, its capable of 7CFM and 120PSI which is more than enough for the type of air tools you use on vehicles. an air ratchet and air impact wrench both work great on this type of compressor and they get rusty bolts off with ease. the only problem is when painting, you need to have regular stops to let the tank refill and to prevent the compressor overheating. for painting bodykits its fine, but not an entire car.
