Alfa 147 Failure at 90kph...again!

Hi Anyone that can put me out of my misery.

Im taking a stab in the dark here as Im assuming my Alfa's problem could be a number of things.

Dealers here are either incompetent or under resourced so Im attempting the Alfa online community.

A quick history:
I currently drive a 2003 Alfa 147 2.0 T-Spark with a cute crater in the right side compliments of some adolescent idiot. Two years ago whilst on the highway my dash lit up at 90kph with VDC, ABS, EBD and Motor Control System Failure. Was a straight stretch of road so didnt have to wrestle the beast too much before coming to a stop. The diagnosis was to replace the Key Switch Ignition.

Now about two years later Alfa is back to haunt. For about three months I've had the 147 complaining about left and right side light failures, I've replaced every bulb nearly, they all work but the warnings persisted.Being time bankrupt I haven't bothered with having it checked out.

So...a week ago, as Im about to take my girl to an overpriced restaurant assuming a return on investment, my jealous 147 Girl throws a spanner in the works:

(1) It didnt fire up
(2) VDC System failure
(3) Immobiliz Failure with CODE key symbol.

Returned with spare key, disconnected and reconnected battery, and nothing.
Towed it 10metres out the driveway, turned on and it fired up?!?
Drove it cautiously for about 200m, got up to speed and what do you know...VDC Failure warning, Immobiliz Failure warning, You Should Have Traded Me In When You Had The Chance warning.

Ive read a few of the threads and attempted a few of the prescribed remedies:

(1) Checked battery, charged it overnight...check
(2) Opened Ignition chamber and fuse chamber, wiggled around with every wire and disconnected and reconnected every connection I could find a few times...check
(3) Prayed...check

It surely cant be the Key Switch Ignition again?Could it?

So, my current situation as it stands is:
Turning key to MAR presents me with:
(i)VDC Failure (light stays static)
(ii)Immobiliz Failure with CODE key symbol
(iii)Unable to use the emergency code accelerator pedal procedure
(iv)Left and Right side light failure
(v)Humming sound behind centre console on dash(aircon turned off)
(vi)No ignition fire
(vii)Right side door open (worked that one out myself)
(i)Beeps once (long) and then delays for about 2seconds and beeps again (short) when locking car.

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome along, get the car hooked up to Alfa Diag and see what faults it shows up as otherwise you will be stabbing in the dark at solutions.

Where are you based?

Hi Alfa Benjamin

I cant help with any of those but i thought i would mention that i too have that constant humming behind the dash. It sounds like the heater/blower is on even though its been turned off. Very weird. And my display flashed up VDC failure too, but that is just part of traction control so i am not bothered as i turn mine off all the time anyway. I have no idea what that humming is and it is really annoying. Playing music makes it go away though lol

Re: Alfa 147 Failure at 90kph...again!

This sounds like (and it never was an ignition barrel) a loose plug, and namely one of the main ECU ones. Check they are tight, remove them and give them a little brush then refit them, try to start the car again. If that fails go to the relay panel on the front of the battery tray and remove them one at a time and check them for corrosion, clean them and refit, try to fire the car up again and see if that does it, otherwise we could be into dodgy speedo teritory, but a diag really is a must but with this many faULTS IT PROBABLY WONT BE CONCLUSIVE.

PS. Where abouts are you?
