Radiator problem with my 156

Hi - my 156 1.8 Twinspark is now 4 years old and has only done 30,000 miles. It seems to be running fine but at a recent visit to our Alfa repairer we've been told we need a new radiator as ours is looking like its about to go. There's a tiny bit of discolouration on say a 2cm sq area which might be leaking coolant but we haven't really lost any coolant recently. We did have to top up about half a litre a year or so ago bu nothing recently.

The engineer said Alfa Romeo radiators were like that?

Should I get another garage to check it over - as the repair is almost 475! Is thsi a common problem as I thought radiators lasted a lot onger nowadays?

Many thanks

Re: Radiator problem with my 156

They tend not to leak, but the zig-zag fins between the water channels corrode and fall out reducing the cooling effectiveness.

Re: Radiator problem with my 156

I would get another mechanic to look at it, TBH. Its not that old for a radiator to fail, unless it has suffered a stone impact of you live in a salty area.

The original radiator is made by Valeo IIRC, so the same as on many other european cars.
