Good price or the usual main dealer rip-off?
Last week my Selespeed packed up again, refusing at 10pm to go into gear whilst on the slip road off the A3 at Tolworth Tower, for those who know the place. Not a great place to break down.
Last time it happened, just over a year ago, kind people here pointed me to Alfaman in Harrow and I got a new actuator installed for a far better price than I was being quoted for by my local main dealer in Epsom.
This time I got my car towed to another Alfa dealer in Epsom, who have told me the reason the car wouldn't go into gear is because of a faulty pump. The have quoted £510 parts, labour and VAT to get it fixed.
I suppose I have two concerns. Firstly I now understand that the second Alfa dealer is owned by the same people as the first dealer who I was trying not to go to again as they have such a shocking reputation. Secondly, is a faulty pump a likely reason why the car refused to go into gear? Last time the original diagnosis by the dealer was totally wrong, so I am wary, especially for a £500 repair.
I know I could get it towed up to Harrow or another good independent, but if the price is not 100 miles off the mark then I'm tempted, given my need to get back on the road asap, to stick with the dealer. SO far they've been true to their word, calling me as agreed etc, so I'd like to hope they are keen to avoid being tarred with the same brush as their near neighbours.
Any advice / replies gratefully received!
