over heating

hi my 156 over heated today.which was a real pain.i did not take any notice of the temp guage untill i saw some steam!!am i likely to have damaged anything?its not been used for a couple of weeks-its last use was a long run-no temp problems at all.just today in heavy traffic and hot weather.
what is likely to have caused this and what should i look out for.
thanks in advance

Re: over heating

faulty thermostat maybe? That's probably the quickest, cheapest & easiest to fix so hope it's that!

Could be a fair few other things too...

Re: over heating

Hi and welcome Dave
A common problem with the 156 is the rad lasts 6 or 7 years before it starts to lose its effectiveness, of course it could also be the stat, or indeed just a leak.
Check the water, and top up if required, go for a spin, get her upto temp and look underneath for leaks.
With the rad look at the cooling fins in the matrix, often the are hanging of and loose, this stops the rad exchanging heat.
The stat can only be checked by fitting a new one.
For Rads try Aaron rads on Ebay
Most other things shop4parts

Oh and if your a noob, note twin sparks need a new cam belt every 30 odd K or every 3 years, check when yours was done, and attend to it if required - there are too many posts about trashed engines on here.....
