Viewed a 156JTd SW 2.4 today. Help Please!

Hi all

Went to view a 2.4 JTD SW 03 plate with 68k today all the way from Sheffield to Hitchin. The car I think is ok, but the owner is not an enthusiast. Anyway if anyone can offer some wisdom on the following it would be very helpful:

The car has a nice spec, FSH, leather, bose and cruise, whick makes it a Lusso i think. I notice though the leather gearshift is very worn and the 4 electric window buttons on the drivers side are quite loose. The leather and carpets all look in very good condition.
My main concern is the computer, it was saying an average of only 26mpg and I couldnt suss if this was only for a the test drive which was very short. If it was the avearage for the tank would it not be 35-45.
The guy asured me he's getting 50mpg on a motorway run and didnt use the computer.

Also there it was noisy on start up and there was a slight whistle all the time i drove it, I guess this is the turbo. No lights came on the dash under hard acceleration.

What do you think, maybe some one on here had the car?
2003 ALFA ROMEO 156 JTD LUSSO BLUE on eBay, also, Alfa Romeo, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 07-May-08 17:53:54 BST)

Thanks in advance

They are a bit grumbly on start up, so no worries there, as long as it quietens down once you get going.

Most important at 68,000 its red light and buzzer time for the cam belt replacement. Has it been done? If not then its roughly £500 straight out of your pocket IMMEDIATELY to get it done. I mean immediately, so check this out.

The whistle is the turbo, so as long as it is only a whistle, no problems.

Cambelt aside, just ask yourself is the FSH genuine and documented, does it feel like an 'honest' car.i.e.fair condition for year/miles.

As to MPG, if you scroll through the menus (bit late now I know) you get the long term average as well as the trip average...which was probably your low 26 figure for a short trip. Most people seem to get 42-45 mpg. Its only people like my wife who can get over 50mpg as she drives so steadily.

I bought mine on ebay without even seeing the car...big risk, but 40,000 miles later, with no probs it has worked out. Whilst the diesel 2.4 can go wrong, like any car, its by far the most reliable unit in any recent Alfa, by a long way.

Hope this helps

Go with your gut feeling fella, if it doesn't feel right then walk away.
