156- replacing wooden gear knob

i have changed console and got a new s/wheel, that just leaves the infamous gear knob.

it wont pull off with the force i am prepared to give it without worrying about damage to linkages etc.

search has provide inconclusive

how best remove? if cutting, where do i cut ?(through knob or under? -where there is a black ring)

any recommendations on what to replace with - i have a silver console and leather wheel now.

cheers for any input

I used pipe grips under the base of the knob and tapped lightly with a small hammer. It came off fairly easily.
This was after a long time attempting to saw through the knob and covering the interior in dust!

Saying that, I ended up shortening the lever to about an inch from the ring anyway as I felt it was just too long!
