Hello all. I have a 52 plate 156 2.4JTD Sportwagon which is now less than 500 mile off 100k. I have done 83k of those miles and quite frankly they have been excellent reliable miles.
Had a few stoppages 6 months ago when the crank speed sensor tired out but a new one slipped in seemed to restore earlier better performance as well as reliability.
Another problem was the VDC warning coming on all the time just after starting each morning. I think I have now educated the electronics into stopping doing that by driving to the end of my drive, switching off and restarting a few secs later. Then I would not get the VDC coming on a few hundred yards down the road. Did that for maybe 6 - 9 months. Then recently I was going to do a short journey so could not be bothered stopping and the VDC stayed off. So for the last 2 weeks I have not stopped at the bottom of my drive and just carried on as normal. No VDC. Seems to have taught it a lesson
Anyway, the reason for this post is to seek advice on a possible failing situation. I have noticed recently a distinct change in the engine note when accelerating - briskly but not hard. Between 1,500 and 3000 rpm, the engine note has become much harder and I recon I get more smoke. I think it is slower, too. Above about 3k, it returns to the familiar deep growl
Is this warning of impending failure of something? I'm not to familiar with all the sensors / maf etc. but have read posts about cleaning some of these. I'm fairly handy with plenty of tools - did the crank sensor myself. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
