Re: Alfa romeo 156 1999
i think you misunderstand me.
when the engine fails to start, is the engine turning over? when i say turning over, i mean the crank revolving and the pistons moving up and down.
the reason i ask is that a mechanic would need to be retarded to suggest the starter motor unless the engine was not turning over, but i do not like to assume anything about a mechanic so i thought it best to ask. your "almost starting" comment further suggests the engnie is indeed turning over when it fails to start, which further confuses the issue.
the possible causes depend entirely on whether or not the engine is turning over when it fails to start, along with several other pieces of info. to save time i'll give you the run down.
if engine is not turning over and you can hear no noise at al, or only 1 click, then battery is most likely, or starter motor failure.
if engine is not turning over and you can hear a whirring noise then starter motor solenoid or flywheel ring gear are to blame.
if engine is turning over more slowly that normal it mean battery is flat, or main earth strap between gearbox and chassis is corroded.
if engine is turning over at full speed and the problem only happens when engine is warm then crank sensor is most likely.
if engine is turning over at full speed and the problem only happens when code light remains lit then immob is the problem.
