Running problems on 1.9 JTD 16V 147 – MAF EGR issues

Running problems on 1.9 JTD 16V 147 – MAF EGR issues

Afternoon everyone,

I have noticed several message threads on the forum relating to running issues with JTD engines, and in particular MAF air flow meters and EGR valves.

I have recently been experiencing similar problems and wondered if anyone on here might be able to help?

After noticing a sudden dramatic lack of acceleration from both a standing start and whilst overtaking and receiving a MCSF (Motor Control System Failure) message I took my Alfa into a local specialist who diagnosed the problem as either a blocked EGR valve, or faulty MAF.

Well I have now had both sorted (MAF replaced with brand new one, and EGR value unblocked) yet the same error has returned, and continues to return every time I start the car.

Error – P1238 Air quantity

The new MAF has given the car a slight bit more acceleration, but only once the engine gets over about 2100-2200 rpm, and even then it’s still feels quite sluggish when compared to before the problems started. Under 2000 rpm its still miles away from what it should be like.

It should also be noted that the garage in question has promised to take back the new MAF which was possibly fitted in error and refund me, so they are not just trying to charge me again unnecessarily.

When hooked up to the examiner laptop the EGR valve was tested, and it passed. However I have been advised that the next course of action would be to replace the EGR valve, as it may have problems opening incrementally while the engine is running (something which I’m told the laptop can’t test).

Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Any advice or suggestions will be really appreciated.

Many Thanks

Re: Running problems on 1.9 JTD 16V 147 – MAF EGR issues

p1238 is a common code to have in this situation. it means the MAF signal is too high or low, it does not mean the MAF is faulty.

it is usually a sign that there is a leak after the turbo (if too high), or between turbo and wastegate (if too low), or wastegate is faulty, or EGR is stuck/faulty.

check MAF signal using live diagnosis to see if its high or low, then you know where the fault most likely is.

Re: Running problems on 1.9 JTD 16V 147 – MAF EGR issues

I had a new EGR fitted a few weeks ago after a loss of low down power. I have previously had a MCSF, and that was down to air quantity, but this dropped off and cleared during the diagnostic.
The new EGR has certianly solved the power issue, although I seem to have a re-occurence of lots of smoke.
I was also subject to the back order. Popular parts are the EGR's!
