blue-ish smoke from my jtd

Hi all

Odd thing happened in my 1.9jtd yesterday. I'd been sitting in traffic for about 10mins, pretty much stationary, when I noticed blueish smoke blowing from the exhaust. It really was quite noticable! All of the gauges were showing normal and no warning lights were on. I pulled into a side street fearing the worst and drove to the bottom. Even under normal driving the smoke was blowing although the car felt smoother than normal (that might just have been me convincing myself the car wasn't about to die). I stopped at the bottom and waited for about 20mins with the engine off. When I started it again it wasn't smoking.. I've driven to work today and it's been fantastic..

Any ideas what that smoke may have been?

Blue smoke = oil..

If my car is idling or in heavy traffic it will do that when you get going but then subside...

I have noticed most TDi's do this as well...I don't think you need to worry mate

If a bearing in the turbo has worn and is allowing oil into the intake then that'll cause smoke. If its gets really worn or even collapses its possible for the engine to start running on the engine oil rather than the diesel and you won't be able to stop it by turning the key, you'll need to stall it or the engine will just run away and destroy itself.

Cheers for the replies. I'll leave it and just play it by ear for now. It just seemed odd because it hadn't done before..
