Re: Thinking about buying a 156 1.6
my 1.6 saloon MPG is awful, but i do mostly town driving. I calculate about 27mpg at best.
I did once get 37mpg from a tank with mostly motorway driving
while i know the thing only hits the late 20s the computer thinks it does 37 mostly. she lies to keep me keen!
*i know the other 2 alfa 1.6 owners in my office do hit 40mpg and even above that figure with regular driving, not light footed stuff!
so if you get a good one you will be fine. I think the alfa is costing me almost double in petrol from my last car, 1990 rover 414
just check the car is healthy, well looked after and use the cambelt change(36k or 3 years) to haggle the price, it'll cost you £300+ to do.
and the variator, *listen for a loud diesel engine rattle when you start the car, it lasts 2 seconds and is another £100 and can only be done same time as cambelts!
check the honest john and parkers websites for other things to look out for, there arent too many.
