Help Gear box crunch on 156

I have a crunch sometimes when chaging 1st to 2nd/3rd to 2nd, doesn't happen all the time but the change into 2nd is never smooth. Is this a new gearbox please god no, or is it possibly something less serious.

Re: Gear box crunch on 156

Mine does something similar if changing too fast from 2nd to 3rd. I've guessed that it is the synchromesh starting to go on 3rd, but have not investigated any further (as I can't afford it!!). The car already has a recon gearbox, replaced before I got it.

to be honest gearbox on the way out, mine did the same and then guess what it packs up.

3rd gear then 4th totally screwed up, resulting in buying another gearbox

Re: Gear box crunch on 156

Yeah i'd say gearbox is on its way out. My last 156 had a crunch when trying to engage third, this then progressed to third popping out. I was told it was something to do with the sequential linking in the box, I believe Alfa use a rather complicated gearbox

Re: Gear box crunch on 156

There may be crap in the end casing of the gearbox. This can effect 2nd, 3rd and 4th selections. See the following link for a guide of how to check How To... Remedy a non selecting 4th Gear

Very easy DIY job.

Always worth checking box oil level and condition before going further ...

Re: Gear box crunch on 156

The swarf can cause difficult engagement, according to some AO'ers. But the 'snagging' feeling when changing gear, is more often worn baulk rings, and teeth accordingly, on the clutch hub gear.

Change gear that bit slower, and allow the oil to be squeezed out from the conical faces of the cones, and the steel mating faces, and the gears will last much longer. Too much quick shifting, burning others off from a standing start you racers!

Re: Gear box crunch on 156

I have had a crunchy 3rd gear entry since I got mine over 3 years ago. It only really crunches if I try to change into it too fast.
Like me you may be ok for years, just think of it as part of the character

Re: Gear box crunch on 156

this is very commmon on both the fiat and alfas that use the same family of gearboxes. my 156 crunches going into 2nd, but only a little bit and only at high rpm so i'm not bothered.

scrapyard gearbox is £75-100, fitting is £100-150, so its no biggy. i'm waiting until i can find a 1.6 box to fit on my 1.8, then its a performance mod as well as a repair, making the cash better spent.
